Morning Light

This morning, while Juliane caught up on some much needed sleep, Willow found a quiet place to read by the early light.

In Search of Ladybugs

Today we found a mass of convergent ladybugs (Hippodamia convergens) that had woken from their winter slumber and were busily creating the next generation of ladybugs. Willow had only seen ladybugs in books before today, so this was a real treat. What amazed Juliane and I most of all was that Willow kept saying "beetle" after we left the swarming mass. We didn't teach her that word, and we're quite certain she didn't learn it in day care, so when and where did she figure out that ladybugs are beetles? Who knows? She was probably perusing our copy of Bugs of Northern California and taught it to herself. Darn, she's smart.

Beautiful Weather

Blessed with beautiful weather, we went for yet another walk around the lake today. There was enough ice on the water to keep us from going for a swim, but the sun was shining and the air was deliciously fresh. Willow walked a good bit, discovered treasures to play with and of course charmed the strangers we met along the trail. Everyone we met seemed so happy and full of life. These are the joys of a warm winter day in the mountains.

Watching Birds

One of Willow's favorite things to do on a weekend morning, while her parents brew their coffee and tea, is stand at the windows watching birds. At least, I think it's one of her favorite things to do, as she really hasn't told me so herself. All I can tell you for certain is that she seems to take considerable pleasure in this ritual and that she is an avid reader of the National Geographic Society Field Guide to the Birds of North America. (Don't ask me why she prefers this to The Sibley Guide to Birds, my personal favorite.) From her post at the window, she alerts the birds if a sinister looking cat comes around. She immediately lets the marauder know that it's not welcome by banging on the window and yelling for it to go away. Now if she can just stop the cats from shitting on our lawn.
